Lenten sacrifices

The way that I've come to understand Lenten sacrifice is that it's not about self-improvement in the secular sense: You're not trying to lose weight or save money. That's not important.

I think that it's about prayer. What you sacrifice should be something that you do habitually. So that when you want to have that cup of coffee, for example, you're reminded to pray. When you reach for the snooze button, you're reminded to pray.

But of course if you were to do sacrifice something permanently, then you'd lose the habit.

So the ideas is that the sacrifice is temporary, and because it's temporary it can be extreme.
